Music was a passion for Alex. He enjoyed folk music, dancing, and praising the Lord in song. We loved to hear him lead the worship team at church, intermixing scripture with song. Please post your memories.
"Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God, and the great King above all gods. .... Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand" (Psalm 95:1-3, 6-7).

I heard my dad sing many songs over the years, both in worship and in entertainment. But the most profound song to me was the one he almost didn't finish.
It was the mid 1980's and my dad was singing during an area Christmas event at the Kings Center in Aldershot, England. The place was packed with over 2,000 church members, government officials and local citizens. My dad chose to sing a song about Jesus and how some called him master, savior, lion of judah, blessed prince of peace. However, the second verse was about what some of the people who hated Jesus called him. Half-way through that verse my dad started to cry, and he almost couldn't finish.
He did finish, but that moment is one of the most profound memories I have of my dad. It showed me a man who loved the Lord passionately, and who was not ashamed to show it.
This is just one of many memories, but it was in times like this that he impacted me the most.
Worship in music is such a vital ministry in any church. New Community Church is no exception, and God has truly blessed our church with musical talent. We always looked forward to the music team of the Sutherlands and the Richardsons leading the congregation in praise and worship. Alex and Carrie always offered a delightful variety of Celtic instruments to enhance the songs.
It was a real blessing to see the genuine joy and enthusiasm on Alex's face as he sang about the Lord he loved. We can't even imagine how ecstatically he must be singing in God's own presence now!
God has used Alex's worship in song to speak to our hearts on so many occasions. We will surely miss his musical contribution to our worship service.

I came to know Alex through the chilren's worship ministry. He was gentle and so kind when speaking to the children. He always sang and played with joy and passion.

Alex was just a delightful person to be around, and there aren't a lot of people that I would describe that way. He always had a smile, a laugh, a good story and that little twinkle in his eye that made you wonder what he was up to.
Alex was extremely talented, and equally humble. He was willing to share his gift of music with any audience - for their benefit - not for his. I regret that he wasn't able to join us in playing Munchkin Music sooner. The kids enjoyed him , as did the other musicians. Alex just seemed so happy to be there, and he made us all feel the same way. It takes a very special person to sing and play in front of 2,000 adults, or 15 1st graders, and to do both with the same level of humility and enthusiasm.
The Heavenly Band is a little richer today, and we who remain are left with a huge hole in our music, and in our hearts. But some day soon we will join Alex, and what a chorus that will be!
Thank you, Carrie, for sharing this wonderful man's life with all of us. May God comfort you in ways that we cannot comprehend.
Alex was one of the orneriest yet kind hearted people I have ever met. His sense of humor was ceaseless and rampant. Alex did not live or laugh in a small, meek manner- you always knew when he was in the room, and that was always a good thing. You knew something funny would soon happen...
As a Highland Dancer, I came to know him and his lovely wife, Miss Carrie, as they co-facilitated the St. Louis Public Library Scottish Heritage shows with the Highland Dancers of Dance Caledonia this last year.
The Sutherlands kept what would normaly be tedious and repetitive fun and exciting for the kids as well as the dancing gals. Alex and our teacher, Miss Sandy, would playfully bicker about Glasgow versus Edinburough and would have us all rolling with laughter.
His warm-hearted goofiness made him so easy to befriend then, his music and stories were all one of a kind that we are fortunate enought to recall and remember him by.
We will miss you greatly, Mr. Alex. And out hearts go out to you, Miss Carrie! We all love you.
REAL MEN WEAR KILTS!!!!! Och, Aye!

What a joy and comfort to know Alex is in God's presence right now and must be in ecstasy to be with his dear Savior. Scott and I will miss him terribly, as he was a dear brother to us. We only wish we had been able to spend more time with him before he went home.

I only had the privilege of meeting Alex a few times at Celtic festivals over the past few years. Whenever I would see him and Carrie I would always make an effort to say hello to them. I knew there was something special about Alex, but I never asked him about his faith. I’m sorry I didn’t. He had a spirit about him that inspired others including myself. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23. Tonight is a ceilidh in Buffalo Missouri where in the past he always sang and played until long after dark. I will miss him greatly, but rest in the knowledge that I will see him again someday in Glory!
